All you need to know about the 2013 Grammys

The popular line is that the Grammys are permanently out of touch - either rewarding established veterans or teenybopper flavors of the week. But over recent years, we've seen a gradual shift towards an embrace of the "alternative" side of the music industry.

Chicano rock pioneers Los Lobos marking 40 years

They are seen as the progenitors of Chicano rock `n' roll, the first band that had the boldness, and some might even say the naivete, to fuse punk rock with Mexican folk tunes. It was a group called Los Lobos that had the unusual idea of putting an accordion, a saxophone and something called a bajo sexto alongside drums and Fender Stratocaster guitars and then blasting a ranchera-flavored folk tune or a Conjunto inspired melody.

Moments of genius and ill-advised detours.

The Current Presents "Words and Music"

Ever wonder what kind of tunes some of your favorite writers listen to? I wondered the same thing, and knew I couldn't possibly be the only writer who relied on music for inspiration. I decided to create an occasional show to delve into this very question. This time on "Words and Music," I chat with Dylan Hicks, Ethan Rutherford & Jake Mohan of local band Pennyroyal, and poet Rebecca Lindenberg. We'll hear tracks from Smokey Robinson, Smog, Tortoise, Magnetic Fields, and more.

Dylan Hicks' debut novel, Boarded Windows, is a tango of sorts, both intellectual and emotional, between a nameless narrator and his shadowy father-figure.
