Supremes hit was a hit for others too
Today's Morning Edition music starts with the first notes in the song that was number one on the Billboard pop chart 50 years ago today.
They were inspired by the musical sounders that many radio and television stations once used to alert the audience that a special report was about to begin.
"You Keep Me Hangin' On" was the eighth song by the Supremes to top the charts and it became a hit for several other artists as well.
When members of Vanilla Fudge heard the Supremes version, they thought it was too fast and upbeat for the subject matter in the lyrics. So they slowed it down and created a top ten hit of their own in 1967.
