Today's Morning Edition music is from the Spice Girls with "Wannabe," which was No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart 20 years ago.

The band was put together by a British talent manager who wanted to form an all-female recording act. He placed an ad in The Stage newspaper.

Four of the five women who would become the Spice Girls were picked at an audition.

Melanie Chisholm, also known as "Sporty Spice" says it took the group about 30 minutes to come up with the lyrics for this song about the value of female friendships.
