Enbridge announces 40 layoffs in Duluth and Superior

The oil pipeline operator Enbridge is laying off at least 40 workers in Duluth and Superior, Wis.

Enbridge announced in an email that it will reduce its workforce by 5 percent. That equals about 500 full-time positions and 100 unfilled positions. The Canadian company employs more than 800 people in the Twin Ports.

The company wrote that it's not immune to commodity price downturns. But the company also said it's on strong financial footing and will continue to grow.

Enbridge operates a network of pipelines that carry crude oil from Canada and North Dakota to its hub in Superior. Its proposal to build a new pipeline from North Dakota, dubbed Sandpiper, was recently delayed by a court ruling that called for a more rigorous environmental review. It's also proposed a rebuild and expansion of two of its pipelines from Canada.
