Cornell is currently CEO of PepsiCo Americas Foods, the biggest division of the food and beverage giant Pepsi. He has also headed Sam's Club stores for Wal-Mart and the Michaels chain of craft stores. Cornell is Target's first CEO who was not promoted from within the company.

He replaces Gregg Steinhafel who stepped down in May after a massive data breach. MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Target spokesperson Dustee Jenkins, who says the Board of Directors was unified behind the decision to select Cornell as the new CEO.
