Dairy farmers in Wis., Minn. have strong May

Dairy farmers in Wisconsin and Minnesota continue to be among the nation's leaders in producing milk.

Wisconsin produced 2.3 billion pounds of milk last month. That was an increase of 6 percent over the same month last year, marking the greatest rate of increase in the nation.

Michigan and Minnesota had the next highest rate, with each producing 4 percent more milk than they did last year. Minnesota had 818 million pounds of milk.

Total production nationwide rose marginally, nudging up 1 percent. That translates to a total yield for the month of 15.7 billion pounds.

The only state that produced more milk than Wisconsin was California, which produced 3.5 billion pounds. That was unchanged from its production last year.
