Moveable Feast: Mardi Gras

Moveable Feast: Mardi Gras

Fat Tuesday is on Feb. 28, so this week on Moveable Feast we wanted to talk about some great New Orleans food.

You're going to have to wait to get Rachel's favorite gumbo: it's found at Sea Salt, which is the concession building in Minnehaha Falls Park. They are known for their top-quality seafood so it's no surprise that it's good. However, the seasonal business doesn't open until April.

Muffuletta sandwiches are Dagwood-like sandwiches with multiple salamis, olives, cheese, popularized by Italian immigrants in New Orleans. They're hard to find here, but there are a couple of spots in the area. Muffuletta restaurant in St. Paul has been around forever and serves one, as does the new Vieux Carré, sister restaurant/music venue to the Dakota in Minneapolis.

And then of course there's the Sazerac, a New Orleans variation of a cognac or whiskey cocktail — those are a little easier to find. There's a good one at Butcher and the Boar, but we've also heard good things about the version at J. Carver Distillery in Waconia, which makes it with their own rye whiskey.
