Each weekday at 10 a.m., Classical MPR's hosts play a piece of music based on a certain theme. We call these pieces Morning Glories.
This is the week when millions around the world will begin the observance of Holy Week and Passover. Our Morning Glories all draw on faith traditions, each in its own way. We'll begin with four new releases, and end the week with the mighty St. Matthew Passion.
Monday
Castelnuovo-Tedesco: Violin Concerto No. 2 ("The Prophets")
This composer declared that his Jewish heritage was a powerful creative impetus for him. The three movements of this 1931 concerto evoke the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah and Elijah.
Tuesday
Haydn: Seven Last Words
We'll sample the new disc from the Attacca Quartet, devoted to Haydn's musical meditations on the seven last utterances (i.e. words) of Jesus.
Wednesday
Firsova: Stabat Mater
In April, we celebrate choral music on Classical MPR. We'll begin the month with the latest disc from the choir called The Sixteen, here singing music of the young Russian-British composer Alissa Firsova.
Thursday
Maximilian Steinberg: Passion Week
The name of Maximilian Steinberg (1883-1946) will be a new one to almost all music lovers. As this release from the ensemble Cappella Romana shows, he's a worthy member of the great Russian choral tradition.
Friday
Bach: St. Matthew Passion
Bach's massive, powerful work is by consensus one of the great masterpieces in all of classical music.
