Moveable Feast: North Shore Guide - Grand Marais to Grand Portage

Moveable Feast: North Shore Guide - Grand Marais to Grand Portage

We've come to the third and final installment in our series about Lake Superior's North Shore in Minnesota, from Duluth to the tip of the Arrowhead.

This week, we'll focus on the northernmost section: Grand Marais to Grand Portage. The best thing to eat in Grand Marais is — unsurprisingly — Lake Superior fish: lake herring, whitefish, lake trout. Angry Trout Cafe and the Dockside Fish Market in Grand Marais both serve fresh fish, and both have decks overlooking the water for seating with a view.

The next best thing to eat in Grand Marais is something sweet: the World's Best Donuts, a fifth-generation doughnut maker that is open early. And if that's not enough sugar for you, Sydney's serves frozen custard (as well as wood-fired pizzas, if you crave something savory).

And when it comes to lodging, the most interesting place to stay is the Naniboujou Lodge, a historic lodge from the 1920s that is astonishingly well preserved.

Another worthy stop is the North House Folk School, which offers a number of classes in various handmade crafts and skills, ranging from pottery to sausage-making to building your own yurt.
