Jeremy Rockford

Director of Bands

White Bear Lake North Campus H.S.

White Bear Lake, Minn.

What grade level(s) do you teach? What types of music classes do you teach?

I currently teach 9th and 10th grade band and jazz. I also assist with an 11th and 12th grade band at our South Campus.

Do you direct any ensembles? If so, which ones?

I direct a 9th grade Concert band, a mixed 9/10 Varsity Band, a mixed 9/10 North Winds and two jazz bands.

Where did you go to college?

I did my undergraduate work at Bethel College (now Bethel University). I had the privilege to work under Charles Olson and study with Gary Bordner.

Who or what inspired you to become a music teacher?

I was inspired by my high school band director Mark McClenahan. He brought the joy of music making to my small high school in Lexington, Neb. Mr. McClenahan inspired me to make music and the interactions with students propelled me into teaching. When you see students succeed and watch their eyes sparkle it is the best feeling in the world.

If you were to help program a day of music at Classical MPR, what would be a piece of music you'd play in the morning? What piece of music would you play in the evening? What is it about these pieces that make them a couple of your favorites?

In the morning I would program Aurora Awakes by John Mackey. I really enjoy his music. Aurora Awakes begins so tranquil like the perfect wake up call. The music begins to gain momentum and explode into colors beckoning you to start your day with joy and exuberance. I also enjoy the musical quotes from U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name" and Holst's "First Suite in E-flat."

In the evening I would play In Memoriam by David Maslanka. He begins with brilliant yet dark fanfare. He creates a sense of angst through the big brass moments at the beginning. Yet he brings listener to a place of peace with the introduction of woodwind themes. And there something just exciting about the piccolo trumpet parts. It is a great way to end the day.
