Because April 1 falls this week, I thought I'd bring you a movie that was kind of a sleeper, even in 1969: The April Fools.
It's a romantic comedy, with typical mores for the late 60s, and it stars Jack Lemmon and Catherine Deneuve. Lemmon plays a Wall Street broker who is a bit of an idiot; he's in a loveless marriage — his wife is played by the great Sally Kellerman — and he goes to a party one night and meets the host's wife, played by the gorgeous Catherine Deneuve. At the time, Deneuve was a big star and at the height of her powers, an absolutely beautiful actress in every way.
In addition to having great stars, there is a wonderful supporting cast that includes Jack Westin, Harvey Korman, Peter Lawford, Myrna Loy, Charles Boyer and Kenneth Mars. The movie also boasted an original score by Burt Bacharach, and for a while, if you remember, the title tune, The April Fools, was a big hit for both Bacharach and Dionne Warwick, who was recording a lot of his music at the time.
The title tune was also heard all over the place — in restaurants, in department stores. If you don't recall hearing it, I'll jog your memory a little bit by playing a portion of it on this week's Flicks in Five.
