Morning Glories: Music inspired by or about visual arts

Every weekday at 10 a.m., the hosts at Classical MPR play a standout work based on the theme for the week. We call them Morning Glories.

Mia's (Minneapolis Institute of Art) newest exhibit, Eyewitness Views, opened on Sunday, Sept. 10. The art in these galleries is accompanied by music, which was inspired by the galleries' themes and curated by Classical MPR.

This week for Morning Glories, we will hear music that was either inspired by or the source of inspiration for art.

Monday

Modest Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition
Based on art by Victor Hartmann

Tuesday

Felix Mendelssohn: Song without Words: Selections
Inspired Lord Frederic Leighton's Lieder ohne Worte.

Wednesday

Richard Wagner - Lohengrin: Prelude to Act I
Kandinsky's Composition 8 was inspired by hearing a performance of Wagner's Lohengrin

Thursday

Ralph Vaughan Williams: Job: A Masque for Dancing: Selections
Ballet music after William Blake's engravings of the Book of Job

Friday

Ottorino Respighi: Botticelli Triptych
Three works by Sandro Botticelli inspired this trio of orchestral pieces
