Moveable Feast: Eatin' in Ely

Moveable Feast: Eatin' in Ely

The town may have traded taconite for tourism, but it hasn't given up its quirky spirit. It's on the cusp of the Boundary Waters and it really is, in some ways, the last stop for Minnesotans on their way the Alaska.

Ely is great for outdoor winter activity, especially during the Ely Winter Festival, taking place February 5-15, with snow-sculptures on display and kubb — a Swedish lawn game (sometimes called Viking chess) — tournaments. You can book a dogsledding trip or visit the International Wolf Center — watch the wolves eat, stay in a yurt!

However, it's gentrified since the old days, and urban luxuries abound: lattes, massages, blueberry beer. And don't miss the Steger mukluk shop, started by the famous polar explorer.
