Charter schools and the resegregation of American public education

It's 2017, and many schools in America are still segregated by race — especially charter schools, a new Associated Press analysis finds.

The AP found that in cities — where most charter schools are located — a quarter of charters are over 99 percent non-white, compared to 10 percent for traditional schools.

MPR News host Kerri Miller spoke with Noliwe Rooks, an associate professor in Africana Studies and Feminist, Gender, Sexuality Studies at Cornell University, about this modern school segregation, and the effects of the charter school movement.

Rooks is the author of several books, including "Cutting School: Privatization, Segregation, and the End of Public Education."
