40 years ago, C.W. McCall's 'Convoy' taps CB radio fad

"Convoy" by C.W. McCall hit No. 1 on Billboard's pop chart 40 years ago.

The song capitalized on a short-lived public craze with the lingo truck drivers used to communicate with each other over CB radios.

McCall was the pseudonym of William Dale Fries, Jr. Fries worked in advertising and created a successful TV campaign for the Metz Baking Company. The ads featured a truck driver named C.W. McCall.

'Convoy' was McCall's lone chart topper. It sold more than two million copies.
