Blue Line train derails near Mall of America

A Metro Transit light rail train derailed near the Mall of America Saturday.

Transit spokesman Drew Kerr said it caused delays, but no reported injuries.

The derailment happened just after noon when the middle car of a northbound Blue Line train hit a piece of metal on the tracks between the 28th Avenue and Bloomington Central stations.

Buses will shuttle passengers between the Terminal 2 Humphrey Station and the station at the Mall of America until service is restored -- which isn't expected until at least Sunday.

Kerr said the derailment appears to have damaged overhead lines that power the trains.

"We won't know until we get in there and assess the situation exactly how much damage would have occurred, and then we'll take it from there. But to give people fair warning, I would say that rail service is unlikely to be restored on Saturday in this area," Kerr said.

This is the second time a train has come off the track on the Blue Line in its 10-year history, he said.
