St. Paul woman, distrusting of banks, likely has life savings stolen from home

A St. Paul woman told police she didn't trust banks, and she stashed her financial future at home.

When she and her daughter came home from work Saturday, they found a side door pried open and the house ransacked.

Burglars had taken gold bars, a diamond ring worth $36,000 and $60,000 in cash from the house, police said.

Officers are searching for the burglars, but they have no suspects and scant evidence, said St. Paul police spokesperson Steve Linders.

There were 100 1-ounce gold bars taken, Linders said, and they're valued at over $1,200 a piece.

Altogether, the stolen goods are worth at least $216,000.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 651-266-5771.

Linders said it's very rare for such valuable items to be taken from a home, but police are warning people to take precautions against burglary.

"If you don't trust financial institutions, which is what the victim in this case told us, make sure your home is secure," Linders said. "Take some steps to make sure it appears occupied even if you're not there.

"Put your valuables in a safe. Consider an alarm system and even a dog. Do everything you can to make your home difficult to break into."
