Farmers hope for a shot to finish harvest

Some Minnesota farmers are hoping for a break in the weather so they can finish their fall harvest.

The main problem is corn, with about four percent of the state's crop still in the field.

Early, heavy snow made it impossible to complete the harvest in parts of the state, says University of Minnesota extension crops specialist David Nicolai. "Primarily in east central Minnesota," said Nicolai. "There are some pockets in central Minnesota, some in southeast Minnesota as well."

Farmers may be able to complete their work if enough snow melts to allow combines to operate again. But some farmers may have to wait until spring to finish their harvest if the weather fails to cooperate, said Nicolai.
