Janitors working at MN Macy's and Herberger's sue over wages
Janitors working at Macy's and Herberger's stores in Minnesota have sued their employer, Capital Building Services, alleging they've been cheated on their wages.
The janitors have filed a federal class-action lawsuit accusing the Illinois-based company, which provides clearing services to retailers, with failing to pay workers the minimum wage and earned overtime. The suit also alleges other labor law violations.
"That contractor unfortunately, as is quite common in the industry, is coming up quite short when it comes to following labor and employment laws," said Adam Hansen, an attorney representing the workers. "The heart of the case is really just wage theft and underpayment of wages."
An attorney for the cleaning company said the firm is committed to treating all workers fairly and will fight the allegations in court.
Meanwhile, janitors who work for Capital Building Services and seven other cleaning companies are threatening a walkout on June 9, if alleged labor abuses continue.
