Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day.

Around the globe, 39 million people have died of the disease since the AIDS epidemic began. Thirty-four million people have HIV/AIDS right now, including 1.2 million in the United States.

The CDC says one out of seven afflicted don't even know they have it. This hour, from PRX, a documentary about New York Times reporter Jeff Schmalz, who covered AIDS while he was dying of the disease.
