Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is set for an $18 million renovation to speed security lines.

The plan calls for a 10-lane checkpoint to be built at the east end of the main terminal ticketing lobby. Three existing checkpoints will be closed. The airport will start construction in April.

"Our hope is the average wait time with the new facility will be only 12 minutes or so," said airport spokesman Pat Hogan. "We think it'll cut probably three to five minutes off the average security wait time for people."

The changes, approved this week by the Metropolitan Airports Commission, will leave two big checkpoints on either end of the main lobby.

The project is scheduled to be finished in 2016.
