Paul Berglund of Minneapolis' Bachelor Farmer restaurant won the prestigious James Beard award for best chef in the Midwest on Monday night in Chicago.

He was one of two Minnesotans who made the final cut in the category. Lenny Russo of Heartland Restaurant & Farm Direct Market in St. Paul has been nominated several times.

The James Beard Foundation also gives out awards for culinary book, broadcast and journalism categories. Those were announced last week, and two Minnesotans won.

Chef and author Raghavan Iyer won in the Video Webcast, Fixed Location and/or Instructional category for "Indian Curries: The Basics & Beyond."

Filmmaker Jesse Roesler was recognized for his documentary "The Starfish Throwers," which explores how a five-star chef, a 12-year-old girl and a retired schoolteacher discover how their individual efforts to feed the poor start a movement in the fight against hunger.

This year Minnesota had 12 semifinalists in three categories.
