Minneapolis passes Section 8 anti-discrimination ordinance

The Minneapolis City Council approved a measure Friday that bans discrimination against people who receive Section 8 rental assistance.

The vote was 11 to nothing, with two members absent. The ordinance does not require property owners to accept Section 8 vouchers, but it forbids landlords from turning away potential tenants just because they have one.

The measure — which will go into effect in May 2018 — also prohibits property listings that say "no section 8."

The measure had faced strong opposition from the Minnesota Multi Housing Association. The landlord's group contends the ordinance could raise property owners' expenses and push up rents.
