Chance for showers later today and tonight
While skies remained mostly clear overnight, our eyes are on a rainmaking system to our southwest this morning.
The coldest cloud tops on this infrared satellite image rather nicely depict rain showers associated with the advancing weather system.
The returns on this display near Duluth are false echoes, or ground clutter.
As this minor weather system moves east and northeast today, clouds will begin to thicken and showers are expected to travel from west to east through central and southern Minnesota. Most places are likely to receive less than a tenth of an inch of precipitation.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has tallied only 0.81 inch of rain this month. And since Aug. 1, MSP has measured only 3.71 inches of precipitation. That total is 2.88 inches below normal.
Compare that to the September rainfall total of 3.91 inches at St. Cloud and 3.46 inches at Rochester.
Duluth has measured only 1.31 inches of rain so far this month, but they were drenched with 4.63 inches in August.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's North American Mesoscale Forecast System model paints a swath of precipitation through central and southern Minnesota this evening.
Total rainfall predicted by NOAA's Weather Prediction Center through Wednesday indicates up to a quarter inch may fall in south central Minnesota.

After this "speed bump" early in the autumn season, we are looking at warm temperatures through the rest of the week.
