Infant survives car backup accident in Anoka Co.

Anoka County deputies say a baby girl just shy of her first birthday was hit and partially pinned beneath the tire of a car driven by her 54-year-old grandmother, who'd accidentally backed up over her. The baby is expected to survive.

Authorities say the accident happened Friday in the town of Nowthen. Deputies who came on the scene were told the child and her mother were in the backyard of their home when the mother stepped inside the house for a moment leaving the child unattended briefly.

"The grandmother entered the garage to leave for an appointment and was not aware the child had wandered over towards the area where the vehicle was parked. As the grandmother backed up, she struck the child. When Deputies arrived, the child was still partially underneath the vehicle's tire and was removed," the Anoka County Sheriff's Office, said in a statement.

The baby was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. The sheriff's office did not provide any other details on the child's condition.

While the accident is under investigation, alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the accident, the agency added.
