Taprooms in St. Paul will be able to sell their beer in growlers on Sundays starting on July 5. The Legislature voted earlier this year to let taprooms sell the 64-ounce jugs of beer even though liquor stores aren't allowed to sell alcohol on Sundays.

At least five taprooms in the city plan to be open for the first Sunday of sales. Burning Brothers Brewing's taproom manager Hannah Hautman is hoping that sometimes slow Sunday business will pick up due to the Sunday growler sales.

"Previously with just being able to sell pints, it's not been a good day moneywise, so it will make it worth us being open," Hautman said.

Franco Claseman, co-owner of Flat Earth Brewing Co. on Minnehaha Avenue East, is planning to open his taproom on Sundays to take advantage of the new sales. Claseman sees Sunday growler sales as a good thing, but said working on Sundays might take some adjusting.

"We're a small business, and Sundays have traditionally been a time for us to have a day off," Claseman said. "I know that sounds kind of silly, but that's the truth."

Other St. Paul taprooms selling growlers on the first Sunday of growler sales in the city include Sidhe Brewing Company on Payne Avenue, Urban Growler Brewing Company on Endicott Street and Tin Whiskers Brewing Company on 9th Street in downtown.

Gov. Mark Dayton signed a law in May to allow taprooms and brewpubs to sell growlers of beer on Sundays. Liquor stores in the state are still not allowed to sell alcohol on Sundays.

Minneapolis, Duluth and Rochester already started allowing Sunday growler sales in June.
