Salmonella worry leads to pet food recall

Minnesota officials are alerting consumers about the recall of Purr-Complete Feline Poultry Meal over possible salmonella contamination.

Oma's Pride of Avon, Conn., issued the recall because the product has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture said Friday. Oma's Pride product has been distributed in Minnesota.

"There is a human risk of contracting salmonella from handling contaminated products or from contact with infected pets," the department warned. "Consumers who purchased Oma's Purr-Complete Feline Poultry Meal should immediately stop feeding it to their pets and either dispose of it or return the product to where it was purchased for a full refund."

There are no illnesses reported to date. State inspectors are checking with retailers to make sure recalled products are off store shelves.

The department added:

Purr-Complete Feline Poultry Meal is sold frozen. It is packaged in clear 12 oz. (UPC: 8 79384 00017 9) and 2 lb. (UPC: 8 79384 00018 6) plastic packaging under the Oma's Pride brand as a poultry blend with code #1524.

It was manufactured on September 12, 2014 with a use by recommended date of September 12, 2015. Consumers with questions may contact Oma's Pride at 1-800-678-6627.
