New neutrino detector unveiled

Scientists are celebrating the completion of one of the largest plastic structures ever built.

There was a party yesterday at the site of the 14,000ton NOvA Far Detector which is outside Orr, Minnesota near the Canadian border. It was built to catch and measure neutrinos fired from another facility 500 miles away in the suburbs of Chicago.

It will complement a similar facility in the nearby Soudan Mine. Thirty-nine universities and laboratories in seven countries contributed $278 million to pay for the detector.

It will be operated by the University of Minnesota. That's where Marvin Marshak teaches physics. MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with him.
