MNsure, PreferredOne, and what goes into insurance pricing

MNsure says it will reveal next year's premium rates in early October. The state's insurance exchange opens for enrollment about a month later.

The new rates will get a lot of attention, especially after PreferredOne announced last week it is dropping out of the exchange. PreferredOne offered the lowest rates and had the most customers on MNsure. The company said selling insurance through MNsure was not sustainable. PreferredOne has refused further comment and left observers wondering.

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Caroline Pearson, a vice president at the consulting firm of Avalere Health, about strategies insurers use to price plans offered on healthcare exchanges.
